I think this is to do with thew viscosity of the magma itself. Thin lava is very basalt rich, like that that flows out of Mauna Loa on Hawaii. The thick viscous lava that comes out of so-called composite cone volcanoes allows vast amounts of pressure to build up in order to expel the thick lava. This leads to violent eruptions, which naturally causes more damage and loss of life.

Why is a volcano that is fed by highly viscous magma likely to be a greater threat to life and property than a volcano supplied with very fluid magma?

Highly viscous magma produces explosive volcanoes, which can quickly move huge volumes of material which could be impossible to escape. Highly fluid magma tends to produce slow moving, flowing lava, which does not create the destruction associated with explosive volcanoes.
