There must be a light reaction first before dark reaction. This is so that there is something to be compared.

The dark reaction (Calvin Cycle) uses the ATP and NADPH produced in the light reaction to fuel the conversion of carbon dioxide into glucose. In essence, the light reaction provides the energy source that drives the dark reaction.

The light reaction makes two substances needed by the dark reaction: ATP and NAPH. As long as these two substances are available the dark reaction can continue, even in the absence of light. However when they run out more light is needed to replace them.
