Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things because they basically control all of our metabolical functions. For example, every eukaryotic cell contains a number of organelles, one of which is the Mitochondria. This organelle produces ATP which gives humans energy. Every organ and every inch of the human body contains cells that are working for us.

Life on earth is water based so cells must be contained in membranes to separate them from other cells and the environment. All organisms are made of groups of cells with different functions (except for unicellular organisms).
