The diffraction of light from the

sun

to form a

rainbow

relies on the sun being behind the observer.

In general terms when you are in the northern hemisphere the sun is always south of you, even if its by a tiny amount, so the rainbow will always be north of you. This means you will not see a rainbow (caused by the sun) in the southern sky.

To be absolutely accurate however due to the axial tilt of the earth there is a zone near the

equator

where the sun is in fact slightly north of you for about half the year and you are still in the northern hemisphere (which comes from the position of the equator not the sun). In this zone it is possible so see a rainbow in the southern sky.

What season is it in the Southern himispere if the north pole is tilted towards the sun?

The north pole is never pointed directly at the sun ever. Doing so would eradicate the presence of the seasons; it would always be hot in the northern area and always cold in the southern parts.

In Australia why has it never snowed at Christmas?

In the Southern Hemisphere, it never snows on Christmas day since it is summer time. In the northern hemisphere near the equator, it is too warm. Christmas is also only at the start of winter in the northern hemisphere which is why you get more snowfall throughout January and February. as well it never snows because it only snows every time a leap year has come.

Which of the planets known to the ancients can never be seen high overhead at midnight?

It depends where you are. Some planets can be seen overhead at different times at latitudes up to about 24 or 25 degrees, but at higher latitudes they are never overhead. They are highest in the sky at midnight in the winter. At that time they are passing through the constellations of Taurus and Gemini when seen from the northern hemisphere, or Ophiuchus and Sagittarius from the southern hemisphere. That applies to all eight planets.

What direction do winds almost never blow due to earths rotation and the Coriolis effect?

Due to Earth's rotation and the Coriolis effect, winds in the Northern Hemisphere generally curve to the right, while in the Southern Hemisphere, they curve to the left. This results in prevailing winds that predominantly blow from east to west in the tropics and from west to east in the mid-latitudes. As a result, winds almost never blow directly from the south to the north or vice versa.

What are the dates for summer winter in Australia?

When the Northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, the Southern hemisphere is tilted away and vice versa. It is this tilt that leads to the seasons. Since the Northern and Southern hemisphere cannot be tilted towards the sun at the same time, they can never have the same season at the same time.

Why is Antarctica cold even in summer?

It is winter and cold all year round at the poles [North & South Poles (Antarctica is located in the South)] due to the extreme angle the rays are shining at it unlike at the equator, where it is directly overhead. That is why it seems that the sun does not rise high into the sky or even rise at all! Its climate is exactly opposite of that at the equator's, where it is summer all year round and there is no winter (no snowing). Its always cold because its really far from the equator, which produces heat.
