You switched the power and switch wires. There should be two sets of wires in the ceiling box. 2 black, 2 white, 2 bare. Two groups of three. The white wire going to the light is the incoming wire. The black one in that group is the power coming in. Take that black wire and connect it to the other black wire. The second black wire goes to the switch. The power comes back to the light on the white wire of that set. Connect that white wire to the black wire in the fixture. The switch should work now. That is if everyone wired the house the way it is supposed to be.
i need to know what color of wiring goes into the switch I bought, I goofed and took them out without knowing I had to pay attention to them. I have a black, purple,yellow and blue, can you tell me which number gets what. I know the black goes in the L. Thanks, Milt

Check your cable. If you are using a universal component cable, and the switch on the cable is set to video, you will get only black and white on the Wii. Flip the switch to component and your problem may vanish - mine did.

This sounds like a ceiling fan that also has a light attached to it. The black and white wires are used for the incoming supply voltage. The green is the ground wire. The blue wire is most likely the wire that goes to the lamp portion of the ceiling fan. The black and blue wires are separated from each other in the fixture so that the fan motor and the light can be independently switched. In these types of installations a three wire cable is strung from the fan switch box to the fixture box.For independent switching, the junction box should be a two gang box. From the power source in the switch box, the white wires all connect together. The incoming black connects to the top of the two switches in the two gang box. Bottom of the first switch to the black in the three wire cable, Bottom of the second switch to the red wire of the three wire cable.At the fixture junction box, incoming white wire to the fan white wire. Incoming black wire to the fan black wire and incoming red wire to the fan blue wire.
