Name calling devices are a type of Propaganda. An example that can be used is during the 1950's, Joseph McCarthy used the media to spread fear of communism. He publicly accused many Americans of being communists. There were sometimes no real evidence to support the claims, but the accused were interviewed and such on the television. They were called names such as 'Reds', 'Commies', 'Pinkos', or 'subversives'. These names were meant to be associated with negative ideas and their use helped to supplement the propaganda.
