The "Muckrakers" were a number of courageous investigative journalists, who wrote for such magazines as McClure's and Collier's, as well as for several newspapers. These men and women wrote in the early 1900s (some of their work first appeared circa 1903), and their specialty was investigating corruption in government and in large corporations. They mainly influenced society through what they wrote, and as a result of their exposés, even US President Theodore Roosevelt took notice, and so did congress. Laws were passed in reaction to these reports: for example, one investigation was about how rotten meat was being packaged and sold to consumers; stricter food safety laws were passed as a result.
