It is likely this story is false. There are a number of points in this touching story that don't pass muster. We are not told the name of the soldier and it is possible he and his father had different surnames. However, no one with the surname of Grey is included in the list of US and coalition forces killed in Iraq from 2003 - 2012.

We are told the marine spends the night, being brought to the room by the same nurse still on duty at dawn after the patient died. It is implausible that a marine would seek access to a hospital ward to bring news of a soldier's death to his survivors in the middle of the night. The shift for a nurse still on duty at dawn would likely start around 11PM, later than the marine would have arrived seeking admittance.

The next morning he tells the nurse that William Grey's son died today in Iraq, when clearly the marine would have had to have answered the nurse that the son had been killed yesterday or earlier.

It is a cleverly crafted story portraying behavior that its author would like to see emulated. However, in all likelihood the events did not occur as depicted in the tale.
