The habit of reading is one of the oldest and till now perhaps the only one without a worthy substitute. Men have been reading since ages and thus words of wisdom (and of course, words not so wise) have been passed on through generations. Books, despite the advent of modern technology, remain a hit worldwide. They account for the maximum sales recorded for any single stationery item.

Books open up an entirely new world before us. Worlds we have never visited before, unheard of, even unimagined before. They open up a plethora of experiences and tales of awe which one can only, but read to experience. They influence one to a great extent. In fact, men have never been influenced so much as by books. Thoughts, both rational and revolutionary, ideas both subtle and explosive have been effectively preached through the instruments called books.

I have read quite a few books till date and am greatly impressed by some of them. 'Crime and Punishment', 'The God of Small Things', '1984' are some of them. Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Maupassant, Orwell, Narayan have all influenced me to great ends.

In fact, many of my behavioural attitudes can be attributed to my readings. Recently, I had adopted a sort of detachment, aloofness from things that didn't concern me. I rarely spoke and barely smiled; rather spent my time in quietness, reading whenever I could and keeping mostly to myself. My mom and sis were alarmed and coaxed and cajoled me to tell what was it that was bothering me. What could have I said, when there was nothing to complain of?

When I read Dostoevsky, I don't feel like eating for days after. Orwell also leaves me with a depressed frame of mind. More recently, one of my friends called me up late one night to enquire why had I grown morose and sad, displaying a lack of enthusiasm I'm not normally associated with. I was really stumped! While I greatly admired his deep concern for me, I felt that he could never really grasp my feelings, the reasons for my behaviour. On his insistence, I told him so, but as expected, he didn't really seem convinced.

Most of the things I do and speak come from books. Sometimes, I am cheerful, bubbling with energy, raring to go and willing to take on the world and at other times, whimsical, depressed, angry, sullen, balancing on the border of sanity. Really!

Great authors starting from Virginia Woolf to Mary Shelley, Dostoevsky, EAP, Tolstoy, Stevenson and Gorky were all in one way or the other, unbalanced mentally. Virginia Woolf committed suicide at the peak of her career because she believed that she would never get better.

I believe it was this "madness" which provided them with bursts of creativity. Geniuses have always been eccentric and these people only accentuate the fact. Normally shy and quiet, uncomfortable in crowds and parties, keeping mostly to themselves, sometimes even the most humble and brilliant of people are labeled egoists and self-centred. People seldom understand them and being unable to do so, castigate them for proving to be beyond their comprehension. Their reluctance to share views and keep distance is often mistaken as high handedness. How wrong can men be and how wronged can men be!

Coming back to reading, one who doesn't experience for himself the emotions associated with the habit can never really understand the feelings of an avid reader. It amazes me sometimes, how come these great people, all share two common traits- eccentricity and the ability to die at quite a young age. Perhaps they were born only to compose works of art, men would cherish long after they are gone.

I've been greatly impressed by some of the writers I've read and some who I've not. Fortunately, or quite otherwise, I don't know, but I still haven't read 'Mein Kampf', the single famous literary work of Hitler, who is one of the men I admire, if not the only. My admiration of him sometimes urges me to read, and often forbids me to go through, the book. But that's quite a different story. My advice as of now, do three things. Read, Read and READ.

You can clarify ideas by reading and rereading. How this strategy will help you?

Rereading is like repeating a habit. If you brush your teeth every night and every morning for a week or so, it will become a habit, something you do without thinking much.Rereading is similar because (not after such a long time, merely the time you use reading) what you read will become a "habit" to remember.
