It could be a dirty air filter or a dirty throttle body.

I am not a pro, but mine broke the locating pin on the cam pully, which altered the cam timing. Luckily the valves do not touch the pistons! The engine was pulled and ready for rebuild when it was found. I rebuilt it anyway.

I haven't started it in 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, and the same, idles normal for a few minutes, then begins reving between 1 and 2 k rpms like it's pulsing -- does the same in neutral. I have a problem. I just bought a used 1995 Kawasaki 220 Bayou. The engine started running a little rough at first. Kept getting worse and then started backfiring through the exhaust. I had the carbeurator rebuilt but still runs rough and backfires. Cranks good and idles good. What could be my problem? Thanks
