The common headline patterns are the following:

1. Crossline- single line of type running over 2 or more columns

2.Dropline- 2 or 3 lines of type arranged diagonally.

3. Flush left- 2 or more lines of type flushed to the left

4. Hanging indention- 3 or more lines of type, the first flushed to the left while the other lines are hanging

5. Inverted pyramid- first line is flushed to the left while the other lines are centered, the shortest line at the bottom

6. Flush right- 2 or more lines of type ending flush right

7. Stepped- an inverted pyramid style use for one column

8. Long-short-long- self explanatory

9. Flushed heads: Strap line- line of smaller type above headline

Ribbon- one line heading across 3 or more column with lighter type

Box- cutting off one headline before the other using borders

Underscoring- the thickness of the underscore should be similar to the thickness of the body of the headline type
