An incision and drainage (I&D) procedure typically involves several key steps: First, the area is cleaned and sterilized to prevent infection. Local anesthesia is then administered to minimize discomfort. Once the area is numb, a scalpel is used to make a small incision in the abscess or cyst to allow the pus or fluid to drain out. Finally, the cavity may be irrigated, and a drain or packing may be placed if necessary, followed by proper dressing of the wound.
A surgical incision intended to treat or prevent an additional problem could be called a therapeutic wound. For example, a "stab" incision about 1" long is made during surgery only to insert a drainage tube, which helps prevent infection in a larger surgical site.
depth of the incision
a dressing is moist at wound site and a dry dressing in covering it
Wound drainage terms include serous, purulent and sanguinous.
A dressing placed on the wound, and a bandage wrapped over it to hold the dressing in place.
The dressing is what covers the wound. The bandage holds the dressing in place.

I f the wound re-opened, or dehisced, and it was a significant opening, it may need packing w/ a gauze type dressing or another type of dressing. If the wound would be very shallow, it could probably just be covered w/ a dressing instead of packed. The purpose of packing a deeper wound is so that it heals from the bottom up rather than the skin closing over the wound that is still open underneath. That would allow an abcess to form (not good). Whenever an incision opens like that, the MD needs to be notified so he/she can determine the plan of care.
