The term used to desribe difficult or labored breathing is dyspnea. Asthma is one cause of dyspnea; pneumonia is another. When a person has trouble breathing and it seems that they are working hard just to inhale, you can describe it as "labored."
Sometime people will actually sweat heavily due to the amount of effort they need to inhale--usually exhalation is a passive process and doesn't require muscle to work, just relax.
