You can type the words "spot price" followed by the metal you're interested in (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) in the search window of a site like Google or Ask. You'll be directed to loads of sites that quote the current buy and sell prices for one ounce of the metal in question. Multiply that by 0.77+ for a rough idea of what yours is worth.

Remember that you'll get a less per ounce for a single coin or bar than if you had many pounds.
