The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), now known as World Athletics, was founded on July 17, 1912, in Stockholm, Sweden, to govern and promote the sport of athletics globally. Initially comprising 17 member countries, the organization has since expanded to over 200 member federations. The IAAF played a crucial role in establishing standardized rules and organizing international competitions, including the World Championships in Athletics, first held in 1983. In 2019, the IAAF rebranded itself as World Athletics to emphasize its commitment to inclusivity and the promotion of the sport worldwide.
