BIKINIThe word "bikini" is neither Greek or Latin. It is an atoll that is part of the Marshall Islands, which is in turn part of Micronesia. It was used to "determine the affect of atomic bombs on American warships." President Truman gathered the native Bikinians together and asked them if they'd be willing to temporarily give up their island to test the bombs for the good of mankind, and to end all wars.

The Bikinians moved to Rongerik, another island. Their homeland's bombing was televised. In France, a designer by name of Louis Reard was looking for a name for his new bathing suit. He thought the name "bikini" was catchy, and the famous suit, which should be "small enough to fit through a man's wedding ring," received its name.
