ました "mashita" (pronounced "mashta") is used on the end of a verb stem to show that the action took place in the past - "past tense". Therefore,ました would mean 'did', '-ed' and much more in Japanese. This tense is formal/polite.

Examples:

  • 友達に手紙を送りました (tomodachi ni tegami o okurimashita) - "I sent a letter to my friend."
  • ここまではずっと歩きました (koko madewa zutto arukimashita) - "I walkedall the way here."
  • もうしましたよ (mou shimashita yo) - "I already did it."
