People didn't used to have last names; they were differentiated from one-another by who their family was their occupation or where they were from. For example, your name might be Sam, but to differentiate you from other Sams, you might be called Sam Carl's son (if Carl was your dad), or Sam Smith (if you were a Blacksmith). Eventually these informal titles became what we now know as last names.
