Much like how the name "Smith" notes one whose paternal ancestors were blacksmiths or some other type of smith, the name "Mason" draws back to one who made bricks or worked in stone such as a brickmason.

It actually means a Brick Layer. Back in history they used to call brick layer's "Mason's"
