I assume you're referring to La Vernia in Texas. I've read many suggestions that it's a spanish phrase meaning Green Oaks but that's a stretch.

In the 1950's the Department of Transportation came in a started making highway signs with the name "La Vernia". Before then it was "Lavernia", which would imply the town was named after a girl "Lavern" just like many other Texas town like Alice, Marion, Natalia and Victoria.

I've seem many historical photos of train depots and train schedules that pre-date the 1950's and they all show the town's name as "Lavernia".
