"Beast in the Fields" is a social commentary on the impact of modernization and globalization on traditional Filipino culture and rural communities. The author, Resil Mojares, explores the tensions between progress and tradition through the story of a farming community disrupted by the arrival of a multinational corporation. The novella highlights the struggle of the villagers to maintain their way of life amidst the encroaching forces of modernity.
Resil B. Mojares has a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of the Philippines. Except for brief stints in universities in the U.S. and Japan, he has always been with the faculty of the University of San Carlos (Cebu City), where he was founding director (1975-96) of the Cebuano Studies Center, a pioneering local studies center in the Philippines. He has authored books in Philippine history, literature, and politics, the most recent of which is WAITING FOR MARIANG MAKILING: ESSAYS IN PHILIPPINE CULTURAL HISTORY (2002).
