The story of kaidohmaru is based on an ancient Japanese legend (of which I know nothing.)this explains, perhaps, why the makers of the anime felt no introduction was needed to acquaint the audience with the story, milieu, and characters: It was expected that the audience would already be familiar with the story.

maru means round in japanese ships
ゼロ /ze ro/ is not originally Japanese. It's merely the same word in English, inserted into Japanese.
"marú" means "slaughter" "crois" means "cross / crucifix" "leannán" means "sweetheart / lover" As a full phrase it makes no sense, it's just a string of separate words.
