Acordion was a popular instrument especially in the late 19th century, as it had a good range of possibilities as an accompanying instrument for (street) singers. These days only some specialist radios would broadcast accordeon standarts, for an aging public of grannies who took up dancing as young girls with their own grandmothers. You'll never hear Accordion pieces on mainstream medias, this is clearly out of touch.

How much is a 100 year old accordion worth?

Probably not as much as you think. Chances are it was not regularly maintained, so its playing value is probably non-existent. If it is a beautiful piece it might be worth something to somebody. it really depends on the what kind of shape it is in. Tuning an accordion is a difficult process which can often cost 1,000$ for an overhall, and the chances are the accordion would be worth less than if tuning was invested in the accordion. If it is an average 100 year old accordion you might get 200$ for it on ebay.

Where can you get accordion repair?

The best place to get your accordion repaired is from your local accordion repairer if possible. This may not always be the case and so your next best option is to try and contact the manufacturer of your accordion. Whatever you do, do not attempt to repair your accordion yourself if you're not sufficiently qualified as you could damage your accordion more. It is important to understand a few basics of accordion repair and if you look after your accordion properly it will not need a lot of repair work.

Are the accordion and concertina closely related?

Yes, well in sound anyway. Both concertinas and accordions are members of the 'free-reed' family of instruments and as such have vaguely similar sounds. Most concertinas only use one reed per note, whereas most accordions use two or more and therefore come out with a different sound. Both use bellows for expression, but with the concertina being so much smaller than an average accordion, it might be argued that the dynamics on a concertina are a little easier to control. There are several types of concertina and many types of accordion - hence the frequent use of the word 'most' above.

What is the proper storage of an accordion?

Proper storage of your accordion will prevent you from needless repair costs and so it should be in your best interest to look after it. Never store your accordion in a damp room since this will cause buttons or keys in your accordion to stick. It may also cause your accordion reeds to rust and if this happens, they will have to be removed from the reed plates and filed down to remove the rust. Once filed, they will then have to be retuned which is a specialised job for an accordion tuner. Also, never store your accordion in a warm environment since it causes the bees wax, which holds the reed plates in place, inside your accordion to melt. The best place to store your accordion is in a dry place at room temperature, with room temperature being around 22 degrees celsius.
