How can one learn how to play bass?

This is a tough question to answer because it depends upon so many things, not the least of which is a lack of a clear definition of what qualifies someone to be a guitar player. Other important factors are how much talent one has, how much time one is willing to devote to the instrument to acquire the skill to play, and what genre of music you wish to learn. Also, do you wish to play professionally or, say, just at parties when people pass around the guitar? Do you wish to play in a garage band or in the pit of a Broadway show? (The former doesn't take much study; the latter takes many years.) I've had students who were strumming away competently using open chords in just a few months. Others were jamming pretty well with simple three-chord stuff and "power chords" in almost no time. More sophisticated playing -- reading, soloing, covering other guys' solos, playing chord solos, and learning harder tunes, for example -- takes much longer.
i would only try this if you have plenty of time on your hands dedication is important and patience, it can be a good form of recreation and very rewarding when you progress try easy chords first aminor and eminor

Depends on the player, some people nearly never learn, others take to it naturally. I played guitar on and off for a couple years before I got my basses, but when I learned bass, it was entirely different to the way I played guitar but I learned far quicker than when I started guitar (Bass suited my playing style moer than guitar so I learned faster) what also helped was that I already had callused fingers, building up calluses makes playing less painful, if you already have hard fingers it is easier to learn to play because you can practice for longer without getting uncomfortable.

Overall, I learned my first bass song (and it wasn't a particularly simple one) within a couple days of intense practice, but like I said above, some people take to bass quicker than others and I already had experience with guitar and other musical instruments which always helps when you are trying to learn another.

It doesn't take too long. Many say that with the right teacher, you will learn faster.

To play, press down hard enough to create notes on the guitar, and though this may be hard at first, it gets easier. Thin strings are better to start with.

The tuning that you start with is standard so from thickest to thinnest E , A , D ,G ,B ,E. An easy way to remember this is "ernie ate dynamite , good bye ernie". So buy a tuner and new strings if you haven't already done so. Remember to use all 4 fingers. Your thumb is just there to steady the neck. Remember to hold the pick so that the small side of the tear drop is hitting the strings.

Before you jump into songs, move around the neck and play around and have fun. If your fingers start to hurt, stop and watch tv or whatever you're into. Again remember to use all 4 fingers when you practice.

There are many websites that help teach you how to play bass,some of these websites are: instructables, learnbass, studybass. Although I would personally suggest Scotts Bass Lessons because his are exclusive and legitimate.
