both are excellent bass Guitars. This is really a personal choce and depends on your style of playing but i personally prefer the precision. The neck is a nice width, as it allows nice action and movement around the frets whilst still giving ample room around the strings for accurate slapping. Both have very nice action, with the string close to the ferts so easy to depress sufficiently to give a nice smooth tone.
The Fender Precision Bass and Jazz Bass. Other "standards" of the bass guitar world include the MusicMan Stingray, the Rickenbacker 4003 and to a lesser extent the Gibson EB-3.

well if they are "great", companies will make what we call "signature basses". signature basses are created to fit the "great" bassist's skill and sound. so if you have a bassist that you admire or look up to then maybe you should check out if there is any signature bass of your admiring bassist :).Fender, MusicMan, and Rickenbacker are widely seen on stages of many bands with famous bassist. Fender has be around for many many years so you can find many different alternatives and less expensive basses from fender. for MusicMan and Rickenbacker, they are usually expensive and only make few types of top quality basses. I personally own a MusicMan Sterling bass and i understand why many pro bassists pick MusicMan.
You can purchase a Fender Precision Bass at your local Guitar Center. Or, you could look for one online from websites such as the official Fender website, Amazon or eBay.
In the UK, a good quality Fender Precision E Series instrument will fetch £400 quite easily.

If you are learning it doesn't really matter what brand. Put your money into an amp 40watts or more that gives you a reasonable sound. Good brands for beginners are Ibanez, Fender, Soundgear. Some of the cheaper china made basses sound remarkably good through a decent amp. My all time favourite bass is my 1977 Musicman Stingray.
