In recent years, a slag heap from an Iron ore mine nearby Ishpeming and Negaunee, Michigan, has become the highest point in the state of Michigan -- a "mountain" that is the leftovers from iron ore mined at the Tilden Mine. The elevation is changing and growing from time to time, but its elevation has certainly eclipsed other points. If artificial mountains don't count, the highest point of elevation is Mount Arvon, with an elevation of 1,979 feet (603 m), and which is located in L'Anse Township in Baraga County, within Michigan's gorgeous Upper Peninsula. Older maps often list a nearby peak called Mt. Curwood as the highest point, until a re-measurement survey was taken in the early 1980s confirmed Arvon as somewhat taller.

By no means do all mapping authorities agree that the slag pile is the highest point in Michigan, either for definitional reasons (only "natural" peaks allowed) or for lack of a recent thoroughgoing survey, or for reasons that might be called "politics." Some of the oldest mountains in North America are in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but as such they are relatively small. It is perhaps the greater wonder (whether a positive one or not) that a human-made peak is the highest point in the state, and continues to grow larger month by month....
