Cliff Burton used a Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar on the album "Ride the Lightning."
i heard he used roto-sound bass strings but idk I've been lookin. Yes, Cliff Burton (RIP) used the Rotosound Swing Bass 66 - LB - 35-90 LIGHT GAUGE and also the FUNKMASTER BASS STRINGS all available from Rotosound .The light gauge permiy him to make bendings and all the stuff just like seen on FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS LIVE 85 VIDEO from Cliff Em All. REST IN PEACE CLIFFORD LEE BURTON - 1962-1986
Personally, I like the Russian Big Muff from Electroharmonix. It's the main pedal I use on the bass. Cliff Burton from Metallica and Chris Wolstenholme from Muse also use this pedal (although Cliff used an earlier model).

A bass is like any other instrument. It can be used to make a melody, harmonize, and you can even play solos with one (look up Cliff Burton or Flea if in doubt). The uses are only the limit of your imagination. Classical uses are for a type of basslines melody or to harmonize the rhythm lines but this isn't necessarily its only use.
