Cliff Burton was the bass guitarist for Metallica from 1982 until his death in fall of 1986. He played on Metallica's first 3 studio albums as well as countless demos. He was also in another band called Trauma before Metallica, though I'm not sure that band ever released anything with him. Here are the track listings for Metallica's first 3 albums:

"Creeping Death" Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton, Hammett 6:36 8. "The Call of Ktulu (Instrumental)" Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton, Mustaine 8:54

Master of Puppets:

1. "Battery" Hetfield, Ulrich 5:13 2. "Master of Puppets" Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton, Hammett 8:36 3. "The Thing That Should Not Be" Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett 6:37 4. "Orion (Instrumental)" Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton 8:28 8. "Damage, Inc."

in addition to the first 3 albums he also wrote most of the instrumental "To Live is to Die" which was released on Metallica's 4th album "...And Justice For All"

If you are new to Metallica's older albums I highly suggest them however be forwarned they are much more thrash metal than what they have released in the last 20 years. I grew up on old Metallica and have been listening to them since 1984 when I was 8 years old! After you hear them I'm sure you will agree that Cliff was one of the best bass players of all time and it was a sad day in music September 27th 1986 rip Cliff.
