In The Bible, saint means holy one, one set aside for holiness by God. In the Old Testament, all believers in the God of Abraham were considered saints. Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
In the New Testament, all those who trust in Christ for salvation are called saints. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. Christians equate themselves with the true believers in the God of Abraham. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. The Roman Catholic Church has been canonizing saints since the 10th century, but Paul was probably an acknowledged saint long before that. Before Canonization was instituted, saints were chosen by popular acclaim.
