Students should read Shakespeare because it has classic language, a great introduction to drama and important life lessons.
Because Shakespeare's plays are all full of sex, violence, insanity, the occult and dirty jokes. Little children shouldn't be exposed to that sort of thing. It's much too entertaining.
1. It is so well known that everyone is assumed to have an understanding of Shakespeare's works. If you didn't study them, you would not be able to understand the constant allusions to Shakespeare, and therefore a lot of what people say. 2. If you are going to read literature, it is stupid not to go for the best literature available. 3. Shakespeare is enjoyable, provided the teacher knows that the plays are intended as an entertainment and not as a penance. 4. Shakespeare's vocabulary is so rich that the study of this one author will boost your vocabulary incredibly. 5. Shakespeare is more studied than any other author. There is no end of material on his works. It makes him easy to study.
1. They are among the most popular plays to stage, so they are constantly being read by actors and directors who want to stage them. 2. Shakespeare is the most studied writer in English so students both at schools and Universities are reading him all the time. 3. Shakespeare's poetry is so great and his way of putting things so powerful that people mine it for great quotations. 4. The plays are enormously entertaining, so if you have the misfortune to be unable to see them performed on stage, or to see a film made from one of the plays, you can always read one and imagine a performance.
Only William Shakespeare could read and write in his family.
Presumably because they do not have an internet connection or a DVD player or access to a theatre so they can watch them be performed as was intended. Shakespeare did not intend that anyone apart from the actors should read his plays. Everyone else was to pay admission and watch.

In the garbage can. No Fear Shakespeare has been described by one professor as "The Reader Made Stupid Series." Because it sucks all the difficult poetry out of the lines, it takes away the most significant reason why people should study Shakespeare in the first place--his use of poetic language. A school is there to teach new things to students, like how to understand poetry--something which they may never have encountered in their lives before. If the desire is merely to read a summary of the plot of the play, the students may as well read Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare.
Students should learn to read music because it makes it easier to play more instrument, have more knowledge. Sure...its a little hard at the beginning but you get use to it.
Very few people read Shakespeare's plays. Mostly they watched them. But Anne Shakespeare probably did neither, and is very unlikely to have read them. Anne couldn't read.
Most students in the US are reluctant to study Shakespeare because they do not understand the words. It is like pulling out a spanish or french book and starting to read. If you find a teacher that knows the words and works of Shakespeare, you can get students really involved. A good friend of mine was such a teacher. He would actually leave the classroom and re-enter in costume similar to what you would see in a Robin Hood movie. He would begin reading Shakespeare in a loud and boistruous voice as if performing. Then he would quietly use his normal voice and explain what he read. His student's loved it and it got him teacher of the year.
Yes, but perhaps not in the way it usually is. It should be first presented in elementary school, just in scenes to watch, but using the Shakespearean dialogue. Young children are quicker than older people in grasping different dialects and linguistic idioms. Anybody I know who was exposed to Shakespeare as a child had little difficulty understanding it as a teen and has no difficulty with it as an adult. As they get older, the students should watch more and more bits of Shakespeare so that when they get to be in high school the language is not a barrier. Likewise, children should read and perform scripts from a young age, graduating to more complex plays so that they have an understanding of how to read plays before the script to Romeo and Juliet is dropped on their lap. Finally, the students should be made to realize that Shakespeare's plays were like TV shows, designed to entertain and often to amuse. There is nothing wrong with laughing at Shakespeare, and taking a light-hearted approach to his work. That is how it is meant to be a lot of the time.
