The story is written when Stephen Crane moved to New York around 1890. He actually came from the wealthy family. His father, Jonathan Townley Crane, was a Methodist minister while his mother, Mary Helen Peck Crane, was an activist in the Woman's Temeperance Union. His writing ability had already showed when he was eight. After his mother died, his father had died earlier, he moved to New York. There he worked as a free-lance writer and journalist for the Bachellor-Johnson Newspaper; he lived around poor people and saw how the poor socialized with each other. In this story the boy came from poor family, he had a father who is a drunken and had savage temper. Since Stephen Crane lived in New York among the poor he probably saw this kind of family there. As we know the father of many poor family usually is a drunken. So the background of the story is the poor society in New York in around 1890.

In my opinion the protagonist is the dog. The dog is a little dog, probably aged 4-6 months, from what I read this dog perhaps only a street dog without any owner. He does a single change in this story, from the first time he came to the house everybody there molest him badly but he just accepts the molesting acts. As the time goes by he learns how to Dodge and avoid the missiles and feet in that small house.
