Giratina can be transformed by having it hold the Griseous Orb. This item can be found in Turnback Cave. Good luck navigating your way through the cave. By the way, if Giratina is in your party while you enter the union room or a wireless battle, then the Griseous Orb will automatically be removed from it. This is because Giratina's origin forme doesn't exist in Diamond, Pearl, Heart Gold, and Soul Silver versions.
Where can you catch Giratina?
In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Giratina can be caught in Turnback Cave in Sendoff Spring, which is east of Route 214. In Pokemon Platinum, Giratina can be caught in its home world, the Distortion World. The event takes place on top of Mt. Coronet, similar to the Dialga/Palkia event in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. In Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, Giratina can be found in a dark split in the sky while riding Latias/Latios with Dialga and Palkia in your Party. For the rest of the games, you will need to trade/transfer for it.

In diamond and pearl complete the sinnoh pokedex and there will be a new area on your map called spring path. Go there and go to the cave in the lake called altering cave. Wander around in there for a while and you will find giratina. Lower it's health then catch it with an ultra ball or a dusk ball. In platinum complete the first seven gyms then go to the top of mt. How do you catch a shiny Giratina?
When you meet Giratina in the Distortion World or Turnback Cave (in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl), you will need to save before you encounter it into battle. In battle, there's many chances that the Giratina will not appear shiny as you hoped it will be. Soft reset (L+R+Start+Select anytime) and start the game up again, repeating the same process. There's only 1/8192 chance of it appearing as a shiny, so be patient as you repeatedly soft reset. It is recommended that you have a Master Ball with you to guarantee its catch, but it isn't impossible to do it with a regular Pokeball. Bring a level 50-70 (Depending on where you meet Giratina, for in Platinum it'll be level 47, while in Diamond and Pearl it'll be level 70.) Pokemon that will cause Giratina to fall asleep or paralyzed. Bring its HP down to yellow or red, then chuck a Dusk Ball or Ultra Ball to attempt a good catch.

In Pokemon Platinum you can get it by going to the distortion world from Turnback Cave. In Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver, the only way to get it is to bring an event Arceus to the Ruins of Alph and trigger the event. Then, when you have to choose between Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina you must pick Giratina. Side note: You cannot trade the orb because if you have a Pokemon holding it while in the union room, it will instantly go back to your bag. The game creators did this because the griseous orb is not in Pokemon diamond or pearl.
