The Globe Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1613. A replacement built the next year was destroyed by the Puritans in 1643. "Shakespeare's Globe" a modern reconstruction of the Globe Theatre was built in 1997 and hosts regular performances.
Patrons can eat and drink during performances, food and drink are sold in the theatre before performances and during the interval. While food and drink are perhaps enjoyable during a performance, a the cushions, which are also obtained from vendors, are a necessity. The wooden benches become quite uncomfortable without them.
Yes. You could buy fish or chicken on a stick to eat, wine or water to drink, and tomatos to throw at bad actors. They may have sold more but that's what I found.
Yes they did eat and one of the things that was sold was oranges. Ladies with baskets of oranges sold them on the floor of the theater which was made up of men. It was quite rowdy and stinky as well.
Back then there were no seat cushions (and if you bought the cheap ticket, no seats), but people could eat, drink and smoke in the theatre all they wanted. The play went continually, with no intermissions, and there were no bathrooms. Those who couldn't hold it added to the smell of thousands of people huddled together who had not had a bath for months.
The Epic Theatre's main practitioner was Bertolt Brecht. The major characteristics are that the audience weren't actually audiences. They were more like spectators as they were not spoon fed, therefore majority of the epic theatre plays didn't give away everything. It let the audience think. They were permitted to eat, drink and smoke. The actors had to portray the character and not get into the "skin of the character". Thats a few. xxx
