William Shakespeare created the Knock-Knock joke. The first recorded use was in Act two of his famous play wright, Macbeth. After the murder of king Duncan, a drunken scottish man knocks on the door of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The joke was in the exact same format but written in early Modern English. Shakespeare often threw in low-brow humor in his plays to captivate the audience. If the plays got boring, the audience would loose interest resulting in the loss of his reputation and money.
