Shakespeare's plays usually contain some humour. Of course the comedies were light-hearted plays to start with but they also included a bit for a stand-up comedian, who was part of the company. When the Lord Chamberlain's Men was formed in 1594, their comic was the famous Will Kempe. Later Kempe left the company and was replaced with a more sarcastic and less broadly comic comedian called Robert Armin. Since these comics were part of the company, there had to be a part for them in all the plays somewhere or other. Even the later history plays contain the very funny character Falstaff and his friends at the Boar's Head Tavern. The tragedies as a rule, also contain funny characters: Peter in Romeo and Juliet (which part we know was played by Kempe), the Porter in Macbeth, the Gravedigger in Hamlet, the Fool in King Lear, and Apemantus in Timon are some examples.
