I am glad to see this nice question, i will explain you by example. so that you can very easily understand what exactly is the operating system is.

Let us take an example of a car. the motive behind designing a car is to get the ability

to travel from one place to other. but the car is obsolute hardware.you need to have some way to get start it, accelerate it, stop it, turn it. etc.for that reason various contols are present in the car.an ignition system is designed to let you start the car.

steraing is designed to let you turn your car as your way of direction,break is designed to stop the car wherever you want. so by means of these various control set you actually operate the car. you can call this set of controls of car as an operating system of car. without these controls, there is no way for you to use this car.

similarly, computer hardware is designed to do much more complex work.

for example, your computer let you type and save the work in file. you can do this because there is one componant of OS which is called fie system is available for you. which let you save the information into the computer hard disk. this is one example, computer can do lots of things.but we need some way to get it done by computer.

here is where the operating system comes into the picture. the basic operation of saving information on disk using a file, can be utilized to develop and application software which can hold specific data for specific usage.

for example, doctors may have one application which saves patient history in file and then hard disk.

musician may save his compositions in file and then hard disk. like this everybody is using a basic service of saving and retriving information on the hard disk using a file.

because operating system is providen file system service to any other installed program.may it be doctors or musicians.
