Mime was actually used before people could communicate and it even is used somewhat today to express to a mute person. Mime was first used in Greek Theater. In Italy during the 16th Century Commedia dell'Arte was acted out on the streets of Italy. The street performers wore sad or happy faces and 'acted out.' Then in 1811 a Bohemian man Jean Gaspard Batiste Deburau introduce Mime in Paris. After WWII Marcel Marceau invented his own special characterizations known as 'Bip.' He was influenced by the 'prat falls' of silent film stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Mime can tell a story, or, simply act out movements. Mimes perform more comedy than drama.

Mimes are quite present in America and many enjoy their story telling or humor, while others find them a nuisance if they are on the street and in the faces of passersby.
