There are several ways depending on your TV, but your TV needs some sort of A/V input. There are several kinds:
- COMPOSITE: RCA connectors, red and white are audio and yellow is composite video
- COMPONENT: RCA connectors, audio are the same, video are red green and blue.
- SCART: a bulk connector used in Europe. Can be converted to composite
- S-VIDEO: a small round connector with a lot of pins, can be converted to composite
- VGA: an analog connector found on many PC's
- DVI: a digital connector found on many PC's. Can be converted to VGA
- HDMI: a digital connector found on many DVD players. Can be converted to DVI
Your TV will need to have some sort of audio output. Some do, many don't.
A dedicated audio output on a TV will usually be an analog stereo mini jack connection, or a newer model may have an optical or coaxial digital audio output. These will need connecting to an audio input on your sound system amplifier.
If your TV has a headphone output, you can sometimes connect this to your amplifier and get a reasonable sound.
If your TV has an HDMI input and your computer has an HDMI output, you can connect them with an HDMI cable. TV's don't have HDMI outputs, only inputs. The output could come from a gaming machine or a cable or satellite receiver. These could be connected to the computer's monitor with HDMI.

Not much info in you question but Good Speakers connected to a 100 watt amplifier will improve the average sound system, speakers are the weakest link in the sound system so you should put most of your money there.
Assuming you are connected to the audio output connectors on the TV, you might have to turn up the volume of the TV to get any audio to appear at the output connectors. If it is a high end set, go into the audio menu and switch the audio output to FIXED. This will give you full level audio at the connectors and then turn down the sound from the TV speakers. Don't use the internal speakers when using the sound system.

Yes, you can connect your desktop to your home audio speakers. The audio cable would go from your sound card to your home audio receiver which in turn would play out of the speakers. However, it would be much easier to use your desktop computer sound with desktop speakers. Desktop speakers can be plugged directly into you computer through a usb cable or audio cable and are available in a two speaker set or surround sound set ups. anonymous@oola.com

You can't play sound through BOTH at the same time. The audio jack is basically a switch. When nothing's plugged into it, the sound is directed to the speakers. If you plug headphones or another set of speakers into it, the audio sgnal is diverted to whatever youi've plugged into the socket.
The term tinny in the audio realm refers to the sound that comes out of the speaker system of a stereo or audio system. It is a low quality sound, and when audio comes out of the speakers, it sounds like it has been bounced off a sheet of tin, thus a tinny sound is heard.

Audio out is a shortened form of "Audio Output". In computer terms, it is where sound in your computer is sent out of your computer. For example, the headphone jack on your laptop or computer is an audio output. It lets your computer "output" sound into an external device like a speaker or your headphones.

If there are no speaker connections on the back of the TV, then you need to buy a sound system. The 5.1 is popular and many programs are recorded with a Surround 5.1 audio track. This system will have its own amplifier and sometimes speakers. Something with about 100 watts per channel would be good. Then connect AUDIO OUT from the TV to AUDIO IN on the sound system. Go into the audio menu and set the Audio output to FIXED.
