Possibly Lanza, but Caruso died in 1921.
It is called a stand up.
Luciano Pavarotti is an opera singer. A very famous one at that. It is reported that the great tenor, Placido Domingo, holds the record number of curtain call bows, which occurred at the Vienna State Opera: a record number 87 curtain calls! Jose' Carreras was dying from cancer, when his doctors told him he would not live much longer. From that time, he lived at least a quarter century, and gave concert and operatic appearances far beyond his anticipated death! From an historical standpoint, Enrico Caruso was undoubtedly the greatest opera singer of all time! From a singing artist's aesthetic point of view, Mario Lanza was without question the most beautiful tenor voice of the previous century, who was also the singing idol of the world's three greatest operatic tenors at the close of the 20th century; viz., Luciano Pavarotti, Jose' Carreras, and Placido Domingo. The celebrated Italian conductor, Arturo Toscanini [who conducted all his operatic and symphonic scores from memory!], declared that Mario Lanza had the greatest tenor singing voice of the 20th century! Probably the greatest soprano singers of the 20th century were Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi, the latter singer who was said to have the "voice of an Angel!" by many musical intelligentsia. The German born, American Basso Cantante i Profundo, Jerome Hines, has the longest continuous career at the Metropolitan Opera: a fantastic 41 seasons! Mr. Hines did not begin to sing until he had graduated with his Master's degree in Chemistry from UCLA, and sang his last professional concert in his 80th year! He also composed his own opera, "I Am the Way," on the life of Christ, which had over one hundred performances, worldwide, before his death in 2003.
