Despite his wife refusing to allow him 'stir one foot to seek a foe' [act 1, scene 1, line 82] to Lord Montague made no attempt to end the feud, which led to the deaths of Tybalt and Mercutio, which eventually caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Also, Romeo does not seem too keen on trusting them with his emotions. When asked by Benvolio the reason for his mood, Romeo's father said 'I neither know it nor can learn of him' [act 1, scene 1, line 147]. This means that Romeo will not tell them. Had they been more loving and approchable to him when he was younger, he would have felt more able to trust them with the news of his love and marriage. They could then have done all they could to support him, instead of leaving his fate in the hands of an incompetent friar, who values his own safety over that of those he had endangered.
