The Romeo and Juliet story is like an urban legend: you can trace it back through many retellings, and each time new details are added or changed. If you pursue it far enough you get a story which was basically similar, but did not take place in Verona and did not involve people called Romeo and Juliet.

Even as it stands, the story does not agree with historical fact, because although the Montecchi (Montagues) were a Veronese family, the Capulets were actually from Cremona. This makes the accidental meeting of the heirs of these two houses virtually impossible.

The story in its various incarnations is probably ultimately based on the story of Pyramus and Thisbe in Ovid's Metamorphoses, which nobody has ever tried to claim was a collection of true stories.
