In Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest' Caliban narrates how he was at first glad to be taught language by Prospero, whom he reminds of his initial kindness to Caliban when Prospero first landed on the island ("...thou strok'd me, and made much of me..."). But he quickly came to resent, and then loathe the fact that he had been taught to speak and understand human language, when it became plain to him that Prospero's main motive for doing this was in order to use him as a slave ("...The Lord strike thee with the Red Plague for learning me your language!!")
