Mercutio's first attempt to snap Romeo out of his depression is his speech on Queen Mab on the way to the Capulet's party.
Romeo had to kill someone, in order for the sequence of events to happen properly. Tybalt has been set up as a quarrelsome man who imagines that he has a grudge against Romeo for crashing Capulet's party (Capulet didn't seem to mind) and so will inevitably create a fight, which creates the occasion for Romeo to kill him.
In the fight between mercuito and Tybalt: Tybalt comes into the court place and mercutio starts egging him on. Pretty soon they start fighting but its not a serious fight. Tybalt is really waiting to kill romeo because he is mad at him for going to the capulets party. Then romeo shows up and he doesnt want to kill Tybalt bc he is now married to Juliet and they are technicaly cousins. Tybalt doesnt know this and he is still fighting mercutio. Then romeo interferes to stop the fight but Tybalt accidentaly stabs mercutio when romeo gets in the way which kills mercutio. Then romeo goes to avenge mercutio and he ends of stabbing Tybalt, who then dies. Then romeo is banished to mantua by the prince.
By talking dirty about Rosaline, pretending he is casting a magic spell. It doesn't work, mostly because Romeo doesn't give two hoots about Rosaline any more.
They think that Romeo wanted to leave the party because he's so depressed about Roseline and didn't go home because he thought they might try to talk to him.

Mercurio teases Romeo because he is preoccupied with love for Rosaline and is neglecting his friendships. Mercurio uses light-hearted teasing to try to snap Romeo out of his lovesick mood and engage with his friends.

Prince Escalus banned fighting in Verona and enforced the punishment of death. Mercutio and Tybalt were fighting and Romeo came in between them to try and stop them. Tybalt reached under Romeo and stabbed Mercutio, killing him. Mercutio was a good friend of Romeos, so Romeo fought against Tybalt and killed him. Prince Escalus found out but did not sentence Romeo to death because he knew Romeo had good intentions and Mercutio was related to the Prince; instead he banished Romeo to Mantua where he would live forever.
Mercutio and Benvolio are discussing the hot day and the possibility of a quarrel. Tybalt enters looking for Romeo and rudely addresses them. Mercutio and Tybalt are about to fight when Romeo enters. Romeo tries to avoid the conflict because he is now married to a Capulet. Mercutio cannot stand Romeo submitting to Tybalt's cruelty and draws his sword to fight. Romeo and Benvolio try to stop the fight. Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo's arm and leaves. Mercutio ends up dying. Romeo realizes his love for Juliet has made him soft and now seeks revenge. Tybalt returns and they fight. Romeo kills Tybalt and then flees after reflecting on what he has done.
In Act I, scene iv of "Romeo and Juliet," Romeo is about to tell Mercutio about a dream that he had. Mercutio is quick to cut Romeo off and tell him about Queen Mab. According to Mercutio and the speech that he gives in this scene, Queen mab is the dream fairy -- she is the fairy who gives people their dreams and decides what they will dream about. There are several examples that are given within this speech -- for example women dream of kisses, priests dream of tithes, lawyers dream of money (fees), etc. Within this speech (toward the beginning) Mercutio also discusses how small this Queen Mab is.
It depends on who is trying to prevent his death and when. Capulet could have prevented Tybalt's death by sending him off to his father's house (wherever that was) with a flea in his ear after Act 1 Scene 5.
