As with any physical activity, the number of calories burned depends on a variety of factors including the duration and intensity of the activity, and the weight, age and gender of the participant.
A 130 pound woman performing very basic moves that elevate the heart rate only slightly will burn significantly fewer calories than a woman of similar weight and body composition who performs a continuous series of advanced tricks. A 180 pound man performing those same advanced tricks will burn calories at an even higher rate.
As a general guide, pole dancing at a beginner level, where few spins or tricks are involved, burns a similar number of calories per hour as a mild-moderate aerobic fitness class.
Intermediate level pole dancing, where spins and other airborne moves are interspersed with more basic moves, is roughly equivalent to a moderate-intense aerobic fitness class in terms of calorie burn.
And at an advanced level, such as that shown in the video referenced below, the number of calories burned per hour is obviously very high. At this level, pole dancing is both a cardio and strength workout, which places heavy demands on the body's energy systems and results in a high rate of caloric burn both during and after the workout. It would not be unreasonable to assume a rate of 800+ calories per hour at this level, assuming the activity could be sustained for this long!
Pole Dancing is a form of dance which provides an excellent work out for many muscles in the body. I have done pole dancing so I can tell you first hand that to climb, spin etc on a pole involves strength and is a good cardio work out too. It is good.

Miley did not pole dance. The only reason she had a pole was so she could hold onto it when the guy pushes the cart so she won't fall off. That's not pole dancing.
Hip hop or pole dancing. Many articles say Zumba is most effective in burning calories. I know yoga isn't a dance but it burns almost as many calories as Zumba which worked great for me.
Information about pole dancing poles can be found on many online websites. Some of these websites include X-Pole, Spencer's, The Pole Dancing Shop, Platinum Stages, and The Heart of Pole.
You srip down and up, dance sensually and gracefully around a vertical pole and be all sexy and happy. ADDITIONAL: When you pole dance you use many muscles in the body, like the arms, legs, core and obliques. You can climb, twist and spin using the pole and can choreograph many dances. There are two main types of pole dancing; Recreational/Fitness Pole Dancing and then there is Stripping Pole Dancing. Self explanatory. :)
Since pole dancing has become a popular form of dance and exercise there are many ways to find lessons. Video lessons can be found easily online, as well as many cities have studios that are teaching classes on pole dancing.

Pole dancing is an amazing form of exercise. Having done pole dancing myself I can tell you that it works many muscles of the body, including the core muscles, the obliques, the arms and the legs. To climb, spin etc on a pole involves strength and is a good cardio work out too. Enjoy :)
