Sorry but for me the fathers of OS are Kenneth Lane Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, creators of UNIX Bill Gates
YES...if your name is bill gates If you have his permission, or you could just change your o.s. yourself from xp to vista or whatever.
Yes, the earliest computers built did not have operating systems (the idea of an operating system had not been thought of) so individual programs were loaded and run one at a time. The first computer I used (in 1973) had no operating system, programs punched on decks of cards were loaded and run one at a time. The first microcomputers sold did not have enough memory to load an operating system. When Bill Gates wrote the original version of Microsoft BASIC for the MITS Altair 8800 the standard 8800 came with only 256 bytes of RAM and Microsoft BASIC could not run with less than 4096 bytes of RAM (it was already very expensive to expand the RAM to that size), so Microsoft BASIC was written to run without an operating system. There are also embedded system computers that are dedicated to one purpose and usually run one preloaded program supplied by the manufacturer and do not allow other programs to be loaded. While some embedded system computers do use an operating system, it is also common for the preloaded program to be written to directly control all the hardware directly without the need for an operating system.
AnswerActually it was Gary Kildall who invented the first operating system... Patterson bought it for 5 bucks at a hackers computer store. All Patterson did was switch the A drive and the C drive and called it his own. IBM went to Kildall first but he wasn't home and his wife wouldn't sign the non-disclosure paper. Then Bill Gates called Patterson and gave him 50,000 for the operating system and all the rights to it. Kildall was killed in a bar fight in 1994 after becoming an alcoholic because he watched his life's work being taken from him. Tim Patterson and Microsoft didn't actually do anything. Tim Patterson (with a little help from Bill and Steve) created DOS. Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer worked together on the first GUI OS (Windows).

Microsoft purchased an operating system from a small company, reworked it to meet IBM's specifications, renamed it MS-DOs, and charged IBM only $80,000 for a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use MS-DOS forever. -Isaac
What is importance of the project tracking bill system
Bill Gates made a deeal with IBM to license the DOS (disk oprerating system) on every computer IBM. IBM thought that the money was in the hardware. But as profit margins fell on the hardware it turned out that Gates made the right choice. Pretty soon he had the rights to sell the operating system on every IBM compatible computer.
Bill Gates created DOS, that lead to the development of Windows, the world's most popular Operating System.
