Tybalt actually did it in a kind of accident, he didn't see where his blade was going. Mercutio only died because he couldn't see Tybalt's blade because Romeo had jumped in between them to stop the fight.

+Romeo jumps in the way.

+Tybalt wants to keep fighting, so he thrusts his rapier in the gap between Romeo's arm and body.

+Mercutio nor Tybalt saw the rapier, until it was too late and the rapier landed square in his chest.

Mercutio was killed by Tybalt. Tybalt wanted to fight Romeo, and when Romeo refused to fight him because Tybalt was now his cousin, Mercutio was infuriated and decided to fight him himself. They had begun to fight and Romeo, upset, put his arm around Mercutio enabling him to defend himself. During which Tybalt stabbed him, and he would soon die afterwards.

Before Romeo walks in on the scene, Mercutio and Benvolio walk around thinking they should go home. Tybalt shows up ready to kill Romeo. Mercutio taunts Tybalt to pull his sword and they fight. Romeo decides to show up when they are fighting. Tybalt stops and wants to kill Romeo. Romeo (just married so Tybalt is his cousin) says how he loves him. Mercutio gets mad and him and Tybalt start fighting again. Romeo steps between them, facing Tybalt leaving Tybalt a free shot while blocking Mercutio. Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo's arm. Tyblat runs, while Romeo is shocked. When Tybalt comes back Romeo is like "the hulk." He fights Tybalt and stabs him. He runs to Friar Laurence and finds out that he is banished to Mantua.

Hope this helps! :)
