In this painting he is holding what i have concuded to be a hankerchief. The meaning of it i believe it represents the mourning of Pope Julius II on something or someone. This goes along with the fact that the painted has only been dated to the fact that there was a period in time that he was sad and mourning for someone and he grew out his beard during that time.
