The book of Esther mentions a king (Xerxes) who divorced his wife and wanted a new one. The kingdom searched among the people for fair maidens, and brought the top competitors before the king. The king chose Esther as his new queen.

I actually recently judged one of Nationals Miss Teen Pageants, and I can assure you it's a real pageant. All pageants do have entry fees, but that's not unusual. Also, this is not a beauty pageant; it's a self development pageant that focuses on personal growth instead of physical beauty. That said, the pageant was a cattle call that cumulated in a 4 hour production with no intermission. The staff was very small and they travel to do this pageant each weekend in a different city. It's a boxed pageant - meaning the same thing over and over again and they don't get to know or prepare their girls for the next level. All pageants are businesses, but this one is just all about the money. The judges were told exactly how to score. As a judge, I think there is a lot of room for improvement. I would spend your money on a teen pageant that gives you a recognizable title, and a director who can work with you to book appearances and prepare you for the next level of competition. Yes, it's a real pageant. But I'd still stay away.
