maybe because it was his plan that wen wrong. it was his fault that everyone thought Juliet was dead, also he should of informed to romeo about the plan before Juliet drank the potion to prevent such disasters. so it technically was his fault for trying to fix something he couldn't.
He is certainly not responsible for killing Tybalt or Mercutio. He did not make Romeo and Juliet fall in love. He is not the cause of the feuding families.
Approximately 27.625%. And if that sounds preposterous to you, you are right--you cannot measure to what extent any one person is "responsible" for what happens. It is completely possible to make an argument that every single person in the play is "responsible" for the tragedy, from Friar John (what was he doing visiting a plague-house when he had a life-or-death message to deliver?) to the apothecary (selling poisons is illegal and wrong!) to Benvolio (whose idea was it to get Romeo looking at other girls anyway?) It's a stupid question for your teacher to ask because the play is not about finding someone to blame--it's about reconciliation and forgiveness. Do Capulet and Montague argue about who was "responsible" at the end of the play? Hmm?
