Prostitution as a social problem

Prostitution is a social problem not only

in Kenya but the world over and is said to

be the oldest trade in the world. Its

existence can be traced from as far as

biblical times to ancient Greece where it

was associated with religion. Despite

efforts to eradicate it, prostitution has

the uncanny ability of adapting itself to

any institutional system. Whether

tolerated as a social evil or outlawed as

an illegal act it has always managed to

thrive in society. Due to its adaptability it

has always outwitted all forms of legal

regulation and any previous attempts to

abolish it by declaring it a crime have just

driven it further underground into the

hands of criminal syndicates and corrupt

officials.

The Oxford Advanced Learner's

Dictionary defines prostitution as "the

offering of the body to indiscriminate

lewdness for hire". A prostitute has been

defined as "a person who makes it a

profession to gratify the lust of various

persons of the opposite or the same sex".

The above definitions are noted to have

included both male and female

prostitutes contrary to others such as the

one in Stones Justices' Manual that

defines prostitution as "the offering for

reward by a female of her body
